Art by Natasha Blazevic "the early bird gets the worm"

So often, people are incredolous at hearing our story. It's a little...hard to believe. Surely a Municipality of 6000 and a Conservation Authority wouldn't work together for eight years to destroy a children's nature centre - a community run, not-for-profit at that. Right?!?

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, and early in 2026 the township will have us in court. Prior to this the township has repeatedly threatened to sue us. The township has never agreed that we are a Community Service for the purpose of education, as allowed in their bylaws. Now they are attacking our sole operating renue, our Airbnb, even though we are a commercial property that was home to Riverdale Bed and Breakfast, and zoned for Hotel and Motel (we also happen to meet their exact definion of Hotel from their own bylaw. The township argues we also meet their definition of Lodge, which is not allowed in a 1:100 floodplain. Our property was designated floodplain by the RVCA a year after we began operating in June 2017).

Rideau Valley Conservation Authourity (RVCA) had us complete 22 new requirements over four years in order to grant a permit to complete the re-build of our studio, which they then rejected. The building was then demolished. Of 998 documents witheld from our MFIPPA requests, almost half are shared with the RVCA.

So I thought it would be best for you to see these legal and supporting documents for yourself, and come to your own conclusions.

What you won't see here is any of our legal documents related to our lawsuit against Tay Valley Township, as they placed the settlement under a strict confidentiality agreement in the spring of 2025.
